Dawgs to Face Michigan State in Outback Bowl

Kick off is 1pm Eastern on January 2nd from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.  ABC will cover the game with Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden (who still won't be coaching in college by then) in the booth and Lisa Salters on the sideline..

Michigan State got a way worse deal than Georgia did in the bowl selections, with two teams they beat in the regular season (Wisconsin and Michigan) making BCS games.  Of course, they did lose to Wisconsin last night in the B!G championship game.

Very tough defensive team to face. More on that later.

Grading Slive on Expansion

With the SEC's addition of Missouri, I go back and forth on what I think of Slive's handiwork. My strong preference initially was for Virginia Tech to join as the league's 14th member. Geographically, I felt that made more sense. However, the Missouri addition does have merit in terms of football and men's basketball. More importantly, it made sense from a financial standpoint.

Slive has added the following TV markets (by national rank*):
    #5 Dallas/Ft. Worth
    #10 Houston
    #21 St. Louis
    #31 Kansas City
    #37 San Antonio
Said differently...the SEC added 31 million more potential viewers in the states of Texas and Missouri...or almost 10 percent of the US population.

From a TV standpoint, it should be a win. The rumored move from eight conference games across 12 teams to 9 games across 14 teams means a 31% increase in quality SEC conference games for the league's TV partners.

The additional TV sets should mean a massive renegotiation for the SEC and it's TV friends. How much more?

The SEC's current TV deal pays the league $200 million per team. The Pac 12 deal pays $250 million per year to its members. It's not an apples to apples comparison as schools like UGA and UF have side deals for multimedia rights that pay millions per year above and beyond the TV deal. However, the Pac 12 deal is a good starting point for looking at financial opportunity for the SEC in expansion.

With the increase in game inventory and TV sets, it's not unreasonable to think the SEC can get to $300 million per year (a 29% spike in revenues).

With equal revenue sharing, the SEC's deal needs to at least jump from $200 million to $233.3 million just to break even given that we're going from splitting the pie 12 ways to 14 ways.

All of this distrupution wouldn't have made sense if all we were going to do was tread water financially. Slive needs to come back with something in the neighborhood of a 30% bump in TV revenue per school to have made this worth the effort.

So...how do we grade Slive? We'll have to see the new TV deal before we pass judgement.

Auburn at Georgia Game Time

CBS is are using the six day option to decide on the kickoffs for the Nov 12th games.

The games up for that day:

Alabama at Mississippi State
Tennessee at Arkansas
Auburn at Georgia (likely two top 20 teams)
Florida at South Carolina.

LSU and Mississippi play Western Kentucky and Louisiana Tech, respectively with kickoff times in the evening.  Kentucky at Vandy is already set for a 12:15 kickoff on the SECNetwork.

Presumably they are waiting for the Arky/SC and Bama/LSU outcomes, although it is hard to see why.  I guess you could see them picking Florida at a top 10 South Carolina for the spectacle of Spurrier possibly losing ground in the SEC East race to his old school.  I don't see what they would want from the Tennessee at Arky game.  As for waiting for 'Bama, having the team of the Century of the Year playing is worth something.

The TV slots remaining are 12:00, 3:30, 6:00 and 7:45.  Apparently the selection order for those games is the 3:30 slot, then 7:45, then 6:00 and then 12:00 (although by the contract, CBS would have a first pick for both of their games).  I think we'll end up at 3:30 if South Carolina loses this week, since it'll be for the SEC East.  While CBS would love to have 'Bama, the compellingtude of two top 20 teams, the South's Oldest Rivalry, and the division title on the line wins out, in my mind.  If SC wins, it is still a toss up.

Predicted times:

Noon CBS: Florida at South Carolina
12:21 SECNetwork: Kentucky at Vandy
3:30 CBS: Auburn at Georgia (70%) or Alabama at Mississippi State (30%)
6 ESPN2 Tennessee at Arkansas
7:45 ESPN Alabama at Mississippi State (70%) or Auburn at Georgia (30%)

Either way, I don't see us kicking before 3:30, and we could get a night game (remember, set your clocks back on November 5th) at 6pm or 7:45pm.  The only way we are noon is if we lose to New Mexico State and Auburn loses to Open, OR CBS is picking the Noon game before ESPN picks, which makes it even murkier.  Or someone requests a noon kickoff. Whichever.

PS. If you have anything more definite on the selection order that I couldn't find, please share that in the comments.

Tennessee and Vandy TV Info Announced

Two TV notes for Football:

-ESPN2 will air the 7pm Eastern game between Tennessee and Georgia this week (Per the SEC official website).
-Fox Sport South will air the 7pm Eastern kickoff in Nashville between Vandy and Georgia (Per Georgiadogs.com)

For those out there that think Georgia's recent run of noon and 1pm kickoffs is solely because of the quality of football, well...this is my response.  It might make it easier to get the request to play early approved, but there is still a request coming from somewhere.

Tennessee Kickoff Time Announced

Georgia will kickoff at 7pm Eastern in Knoxville on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.  The network will be announced next Monday pending the outcome of the Mississippi State vs. Georgia, Alabama vs. Florida, Texas A&M vs. Arkansas, and Auburn vs. South Carolina games (and presumably the Buffalo vs. Tennessee game).  Florida vs. LSU is the CBS game next week.

This week, Auburn at South Carolina is the 3:30 CBS game, with the Alabama at Florida game the 8pm CBS game.  Texas A&M vs. Arkansas at the Jerry Jones Football Palace will be at noon Eastern on ESPN.

Georgia - Mississippi State Game Time

I'll have an update when it comes out, but the SEC office has already said their will be no competing games for the two CBS games (3:30 and 8).  All other games will be noon or earlier kickoff.

I'm guessing the two games will be some combination of Alabama at Florida (which is a near mortal lock for one of the CBS slots), Texas A&M at Arkansas (at Jerry World in Dallas), Auburn at South Carolina (SECCG rematch), and Mississippi State at Georgia.  Just looking at that list, I don't see any way CBS picks the UGA game over both of those other two games without ESPN doing some serious late season horse trading to get the other games.

So, I'm going with Noon on ESPN.

UPDATE: Noon on Fox Sports South, per the SEC.
